History of Football Formation

Football games have formations or placements of players according to their tasks and space so that the competition in soccer is more regular. Formations in soccer games can be interpreted as a coach's way of placing players in their strategy or, more simply, team strategy. in the game of football, there is an exception, namely a keeper; they do not enter into formation because their position does not change or is fixed and cannot be replaced. Okay, on this occasion, we will see changes in football formations from time to time.

1. The early years (1-1-8), 1872

This formation sounds crazy, but here it was; it was used during England vs Scotland in the international match in 1872. England used the 1-1-8 and 1-2-7 formations at different times, while Scotland used the 2-2-6. With the 1-1-8 formation, the English players were demanded by individual abilities because they only had one defender and one midfielder. At that time, the football game was more concerned with how many goals there were than how to defend.

This formation is better known as a pyramid formation because, as we can see, this formation is like a pyramid. This formation can be said to be balanced at its time because this formation offers balanced attack and defense, although the weakness of this formation is that the fullback is needed very hard to be able to cover the opposing team's wingers; as we can see, this formation has only two fullbacks.

3. W-M (3-2-2-3)

The 3-2-2-3 formation is a formation that evolved from the 2-3-5 formation or the pyramid formation. This formation was invented by Herbert Chapman during his time as manager of Arsenal in the 1930s. This W-M formation was very successful, leading Arsenal won two Premier League Division One and one FA Cup.

4. 4-2-4

The 4-2-4 formation is a formation created by a manager who came from Hungary named Bela Guttmann. The 4-2-4 formation was later adopted by Vicente Feola while still coaching the Brazilian national team in the 1958 World Cup, which ended in victory after beating Sweden 5-2.

5. 4-3-3

The 4-3-3 formation is a classic one still used today; call them Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola; they are some well-known managers and still rely on the 4-3-3 formation. This formation appeared during the World Cup in 1958, where Brazil, through Mario Zaggallo, had a substantial contribution to the 4-3-3 formation.

6. 5-4-1

The 5-4-1 formation became known when it was used by an Italian club, namely Inter Milan, and the person who invented it was Helenio Herrera. This formation has a defensive character because it puts three center-backs, two wing-backs, and four midfielders; two are wingers and one attacker. The 5-4-1 formation is not much different from the 5-3-2 formation; it's just that there are four midfielders in midfield. Both the Italian club and the Italian national team have had success with 5-4-1 formations, including when they won second place at the World Cup in 1970.
